The main difference between gas heaters and electric heaters is that the gas heaters are fitted with a pilot light at the bottom to ignite the burner. They have only a single burner and also have a flue running through the center of the tank to exhaust combustion gases.

Electric heaters have a lower and an upper heating element. Both models feature a temperature release valve near the top of the tank. This valve will allow steam or hot water to escape safely, in case of a malfunction in the thermostat. Needless to say, regular periodic check up is a must for their proper functioning.
