Space Heater Efficiency

Space heater efficiency is normally at its best as you utilize your outdoor space for heating during cooler months. You can have a wide range of different types of energy efficient space heaters that have proven space heater efficiency. This include electric heaters, propane heaters and natural gas heaters.

Electric heaters

Electric heaters can be mounted to walls or ceilings and use infrared heat, like the sun. The smaller portable heaters can be placed anywhere you need warmth. The strip style heaters that are mounted out of reach come in a range of lengths which allow you to customize your heaters for your specific space.

These types of heaters range in wattage from approximately 1500 watts to 4000 watts. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the heater. The advantage of electric heaters is that they require less space for ceiling and wall clearances

Propane heaters

Propane heaters are self contained units fueled by propane gas tanks. These heaters provide heat by burning propane gas and radiating heat off of burner grids located at the top of the heater. These heaters can radiate heat out to a diameter up to around 20 feet. The higher the BTU's the more powerful the heater. There are several models with built-in wheels making its handling easy. The ceiling clearances for propane heaters are namely around 18 inches.

Natural gas heaters

The main advantage of gas heaters is that, unlike propane tanks, they are directly connected to gas lines and requires no constant checking and refilling. As they are permanently mounted it needs professional installation.

Overall, all these types render top space heater efficiency

Propane Tankless Water Heaters Provide Better Energy Efficiency

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) said in report on 28 October that water heaters can reduce wasted standby energy by up to 20%.

The Council said that propane provides more efficient energy with fewer emissions than other energy sources. In fact, propane furnaces can reach a peak efficiency of more than 95%, compared with 85% for home fuel oil, the report added.

PERC claimed that as far as green house gas emissions are concerned, propane and natural gas emit less carbon dioxide than any other fossil fuels.

With the weather cooling down across the country, home heating and higher energy bills have become real concern of homeowners. The PERC 2008 survey revealed that 98% of American homeowners wanted their home to be as energy efficient as possible.

And PERC is willing to offer consumers simple steps to help control their energy bills during cooler weather and year-round. The report said technological innovations also contribute to efficient performance of propane.

The ultra-efficient gas heating equipment can be used in a variety of heating applications in forced air and in-floor systems, the report said.

Kate Caskin, senior vice president of PERC said, “Propane’s performance can translate into real cost savings for homeowners." He added that propane tankless water heaters cost up to 60% less to operate than a standard electric unit.

Some of the energy saving suggestions are the following:

Discuss fuel payment plan options with your propane retailer. Because, many retailers have budget payment plans that will help spread your projected annual cost of propane over many months. This will help lower the cost of seasonally higher bills, such as during the cold winter months.

The council wanted customers to arrange a regular propane delivery schedule with their propane supplier. Propane delivery throughout the year helps offset higher season pricing.

The council suggested to explore government tax credits and state rebates for high-efficiency home improvements. The federal government has extended many of the Energy Efficiency Tax Incentives for qualifying home improvements. the report added.

The Council said this includes an extension of the tax credit for high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment, such as propane water heaters and furnaces, covering improvements installed in 2009, but not 2008.

Precautions while buying a Space heater

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 25,000 residential fires every year are associated with the use of space heaters. This underlines the importance of taking some safety precautions when purchasing a space heater. Some of the the points are as follows:

* Only purchase newer model space heaters that have all of the current safety features such as a tip-over safety switch that automatically shuts off the heater if the unit is tipped over, indicator lights that let users know that the heater is plugged in or turned on and infrared or proximity sensors that turn the heater off when objects come too close or when children and pets are near. These safety features prevent burn injuries and the risk of ignition of combustible materials.

* Choose thermostatically controlled heaters because they avoid the energy waste of overheating a room.
* Select a properly sized heater for the room you wish to heat. Make sure the heater is not oversized.
* Always put the heater on a level surface away from foot traffic and keep away from children and pets. Also, never use the heater in a wet or moist place such as a bathroom unless it is specifically certified for that purpose.
* Plug the heater directly into the wall outlet. Make sure the plug fits snugly in the outlet as well. Do not hide the cords underneath rugs or carpeting. If an extension cord is absolutely necessary, use a heavy duty cord of 14-gauge wire or larger.
* Broken heaters should be immediately checked and repaired by a qualified appliance service center.
